After some severe sun burns this summer (and a childhood of bad burns too) I was growing concerned about all my moles.

I had the full body scan and a mole by mole check from Dr. McClean and I’m the most relaxed I’ve been in months. He checked every single one and was able to ease my concerns about many of my moles, explaining what kinds they were and what to look for going forward.

It did take 2 months to hear back on a referral from my doctor but once they called I was able to jump into a cancellation and be seen within days.

Coming up on 7 months ago I had a malignant melanoma confirmed by a biopsy to explore a mole I thought looked suspicions. I had a timely wide excision and was referred to Victoria Skin Cancer. I’ve heard nothing since and have reached out by phone, email and messenger – all with kickback messages indicating that messages will not be returned. I completely understand there is an assessment and triage for waitlist, and I don’t want to put myself ahead of anyone who needs attention more critically, but I also don’t want to ignore the passing time and end up really regretting it. It’s scary to think about what would have happened if I waited to get my first mole checked.

I think I might be considered a higher risk patient given melanoma diagnosis and a number of other risk factors - Looking at the clinic website it appears the process should involve a head-to-toe exam with a dermatoscope (I’ve never had one) and follow-up either on a short term 1-3 month or long-term 6 – 1 year basis. As well as photography for comparison purposes.

An indication it’s fine to continue without follow-up and that my referrals (the doctor re-faxed my referral just in case the initial one over six months ago fell between the cracks) would really be appreciated. Like others who have commented here, I’ll share that not hearing anything from the clinic after a significant wait time, especially given all we know about how critical early intervention is to positive outcomes, is a worry when you’re going through it.

Dr Erlank is great and I'm confident in his care and knowledge but two years in a row my referral has been lost, misplaced or possible disregarded. I don't know! I have no family doctor, use Telus Health and the front end staff seem to unaware of how difficult it is just to get an appointment there. Then to have to do it more than once is frustrating and time consuming. I always follow up, never receive a call back or any type of acknowledgment till I can actually speak to someone, only to find out I have to go thru the process again. Not acceptable!

doctor sent semi urgent referral to clinic in January, still no appointment or any acknowledgement they received it. Doctor tried to call, and was put on hold for over 1/2 hour, couldn't wait any longer. He did say this is probably one of the worst places to get in touch with. Finally heard back with an appt. Week before after they sent me an email to confirm, they left a voice mail to cancel the appointment. Told me to call back to reschedule. Obviously they haven't tried to call, waited three hours, no answer.

This clinic are a disgrace. I work in healthcare and this clinic regularly don't acknowledge referrals sent to them, don't send information regarding patient's upcoming appointments or that they've accepted the referral. If they can't contact the patient they don't inform the referring clinic and often patients slip through the cracks. They're an extremely disorganized clinic and seem to generally not care. Go elsewhere if possible. Although tough in Victoria unfortunately.
